a fully equipped apparatus and matwork studio.
Our studio is located in Ingleton, North Yorkshire, a short drive from Kirkby Lonsdale, Settle and outlying villages.
What is pilates?
Pilates, pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates (1880-1967), is a unique mind-body exercise system that develops body awareness and stretches, strengthens and streamlines the muscles to create a firm, toned, flexible and balanced body.
Joseph Pilates was a German expatriate who first made his mark in England during the First World War when he developed a series of exercises and innovative equipment to help prisoners of war regain strength and mobility.
When Joseph Pilates emigrated to New York, the local professional dance community discovered that his conditioning techniques helped prevent injury and improve strength while maintaining long, even muscle tone.
The pilates repertoire consists of more than 500 systematic, mind-body exercises that can be performed on a mat or on specialised equipment, such as the reformer.
Yorkshire Dales Pilates provides effective and enjoyable apparatus and matwork pilates instruction for men and women of all ages and all levels of fitness.
Have I time for an exercise class? ‘No’. Have I time for pilates? ‘Yes’, because it works. Pilates was recommended to me due to an injury and developing ailment and age! I was slightly sceptical as whether it would work for my body. However I have found the classes help any sort of body at a variety of ages.
The classes are educational, entertaining and extremely worthwhile. Jess is an excellent teacher who constantly individualises the exercises to the point where I feel pampered and on a one to one basis. I have certainly benefitted from pilates as I am now able to complete daily tasks without hesitation.
Pilates has improved my quality of movement with confidence, and due to the quality of teaching by Jess I am also more knowledgeable about my body.
I began pilates with Jess about 2 years ago, not really thinking it would be for me. I haven’t missed a course since. Jess makes the sessions suitable for everyone, challenges you but ensures you are safe and work within your own limits. There’s a real focus on you as an individual and she makes it OK if you find something difficult with support and encouragement.
My flexibility and strength have improved, meaning better running, cycling and skiing. I have also had an intermittent back problem for 10 years, but not since I started pilates.
Jess makes you feel anything is possible, and that it is most certainly good fun!
If you want to strengthen your core then Jess is your girl. She is an inspirational teacher who takes great care that all moves are done correctly, challenging you to push further while making sure you are never outfaced. And it’s all great fun!
Why I love Yorkshire Dales Pilates
The classes are small which means everyone gets individual attention and can have exercises modified to suit their personal needs.
Jess makes sure she takes to find out what class members individual needs are and to help them on a one-to-one basis. The studio is very well equipped with all the props needed to help with the exercises.
The studio and props are always immaculate, clean and fresh. The classes always start on time and always last the full hour. The atmosphere in the classes is happy and welcoming.
Why I love pilates
A pilates session consists of many different exercises of short duration. This means that the exercises you don’t like or find difficult never last very long! This also makes for an interesting workout as there are no endless repetitions as there are in many gym-based classes. A lot of the exercises can be taken at different levels so that if necessary you can work at a level to suit your needs without feeling you are not keeping up with the rest of the class.
The movements are slow and controlled so that you don’t feel aerobically challenged and exhausted at the end of the session, though you do feel as though your muscles have been stretched and you’ve had a good workout.
After only a few weeks you feel more toned, stronger, fitter, more supple! Magic!
I was born with a back problem and just accepted I would always suffer with it. It’s taken 43 years for someone to actually help me, and that’s Jess. The difference means I can do more.
Jess makes the sessions fun and informative and will always find a way for you to do the exercises whether it’s an easier or harder option! Jess gets to know our individual bodies and encourages you through the sessions with her professional, knowledgeable, can do and fun attitude. I’d encourage anyone to give pilates a go, especially with Jess at the helm.
